Leaders are made, not born.
Every individual, at some point in his life, is expected to take responsibility for his actions. However, not everyone does so. Leadership is a special skill that is gained through experience. It requires a conscious effort by the individual to be a leader. The learning begins at a very primary stage when responsibilities start falling on you. It is an individual’s realization of his actions that makes them sensitive to his surroundings. Being sensible is what sets you apart from your peer group and surroundings, in general. This trait evolves as you grow, and experience new challenges every day. It is your adherence to your working ethics that makes you a leader of the future. However, leadership doesn’t only come with responsibilities but also involve perks and prestige. Most importantly to be an effective leader, you need to be honest with yourself and others.
Leadership skills aren’t the ones that you have been regularly using, like making your younger sibling complete a task. As a leader, you are supposed to lead a team that may involve elder employees or members. However, leadership isn’t age-specific. A young person might showcase great leadership skills than an older person. It completely depends on understanding and the ability to see a bigger picture. So, before joining in the charade you should be a hundred percent sure about a few things, which can launch you effortlessly as a leader in your respective fields. For those of you who desire a leadership role, you might want to ask yourself a few questions. And if you don’t like the answers, develop a strategy that suits you as an individual.
Can you “let go” of your earlier work?
Many new leaders have a tough time doing this. They cling to their old work habits and roles and fail to begin to see the “bigger picture” that involves the goals of the company, delegation, and supervising rather than doing.
How are your communication skills?
Some significant skills must be learned. A leadership position means that you have to be able to translate project goals to your team so that they can see the importance of what they do and why tasks and deadlines are important.
Can you make tough calls?
Let’s understand this with an example. A member of your team is under-performing. You have tried to be a mentor, a coach, but things are not turning around. Can you outline steps for improvement and give timelines for those improvements to occur? And if improvement still doesn’t occur, can you terminate that individual?
Can you hire highly talented people?
Good leaders see value in hiring brilliant people– hey make life much easier. And sharing the tributes for success is something an effective leader does.
Are you willing to be held responsible for your entire team?
Once you become a leader, you will eventually become responsible for everyone’s performance in your team.
Once you have read through the above questions and answers, conduct a thought experience. Look back to all the experiences you’d in your career. For instance, you might face a situation where you have missed a deadline or few of your co-workers disagreed. Try to scrutinize these situations through the eyes of a leader. This practice will give you a clear vision about areas you need to improve, helping you to identify your leadership styles and emerge as an efficient leader.
